Breastfeeding Tips  --  Breastfeeding Information

Dictionary:

Alveoli: When a baby is born, the clusters of tiny milk glands, called alveoli, in the mother's breasts contain only colostrum.

Colostrum: colorless to pale yellowish fluid that is ideal starter food for babies, it is higher in protein and lower in carbohydrates and fats than breast milk or formula, it is easily digested. This is loaded with antibodies that protect the baby against infections. Sharing your colostrum with your baby is also a natural way to initiate the communication that will gradually deepen into bonds of attachment between mother and child.

Engorgement: This usually happens the second or third day after birth. When you feel your breasts getting fuller you should nurse frequently, even if you have to wake the baby to do so. This will minimize engorgement, which occurs when the breasts are filled with milk until they become larger and firmer.

Inverted Nipple: An inverted nipple does not protrude far enough for the baby to suckle properly.

Law of Supply and Demand: The more you nurse your baby (or pump your milk), the more milk your body will produce.

"let down": This may be felt by the mother as tingling sensation in her breasts. Sometimes, the mere sight or sound of her infant will trigger the let-down reflex in a nursing mother.

Oxytocin: The pressure of the sucking baby's mouth on the areola, the dark pigmented area that surrounds the nipple, unleashes the hormone oxytocin, which in turn forces milk to travel downward from the milk glands to the nipple.

Prolaction: This causes the production of milk.
